Troy the Movie vs. Homer's Troy

Friday May 14, 2004
What happens to a story about divine intervention in the affairs of man when you get rid of the gods? What happens when you turn a war story into a romance? What happens when Hollywood gets its hands on a thousands of years old story? The answer is: the movie Troy, which opened on May 14.
Have you seen it yet? The major problems, from my point of view, were the short duration (about 2 weeks, including 12 days of funeral games) of the 10 year war, the killing by Hector of Menelaus and Ajax, and the presence of Achilles in the belly of the Trojan Horse. Assets, in my opinion, included the actors who played Priam, Achilles, Odysseus, and Hector. Roger Ebert thinks it was so bad Homer should sue and thinks Achilles was too modern as played by the dishy Brad Pitt. What did you think?

This is an ancient/classical history site. The assumption is that if a movie is discussed on this site it is in connection with its historical accuracy or its relation to the classics. The story of Troy is a legend, so truth per se isn’t really a concern, but staying within the storyline the movie purports to depict is. Why are you reading this site?

If it’s a good story, that’s an added bonus, but Troy failed even on that score. As a result of a string of movie blunders like Troy, Hollywood has moved on to trying to portray more modern periods.

Incidentally, the word “retarded” comes from the Latin (via the French) for slow. One problem with the Troy movie was that it was not slow enough.
