The History of Ink
Monday September 27, 2004
In a Christian Science Monitor article on the development of ink, they say the Chinese invented ink 5000 years ago:
"The ink was a mixture of soot from pine smoke and lamp oil, thickened with gelatin from animal skins and musk."Think ink!

Thank you for the info. I now could finish my homework
Everybody knows that Taylor, geez whiz, what have you been doing this whole time in ink class.
It seems strange that the Chinese would have developed ink before they developed a system of writing, and 3000 years before they developed paper. I wonder if the date given by the Christian Science Monitor is accurate.
The 2004 article is still available online. It says that early uses consisted of using the ink on the surfaces of pictures (and letters) carved into stone.
