Pompeii on TV

Wednesday January 26, 2005
A revised Discovery Channel/BBC special on the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius that will air on January 30, "Pompeii: the Last Day" recreates events of that fateful August Day in A.D. 79 when "in less than 24 hours, the entire city of Pompeii, and at least 5,000 of its citizens, were buried under 75 feet of volcanic debris — victims of the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Vesuvius."

Pompeii vs. Pompey
Listen to "Pliny" telling "Tacitus" the story of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. The site also has diaries of fictional Pompeiian residents focusing on the everyday concerns of the pre-eruption era.
Pliny the Younger witnessed the eruption of Mt Vesuvius, which killed his uncle, the Elder Pliny. In the historical mystery All Roads Lead to Murder, Albert A. Bell jr. paints a picture of Pliny as a slightly priggish character, who doesn't mind circumventing cherished Roman tradition when it suits his purposes, which it does when he sees a chance to rescue a lovely young slave woman.
