The Judas Papyrus

Saturday April 8, 2006
There has been a lot of virtual ink spilled over the Judas papyrus, the document that supposedly puts Judas in a better light. Here are some of the recent online articles:
  • CBS 2 Chicago Ancient Document Stirs Biblical Debate

"The document is 1,700 years old.
It was discovered in Egypt back in the 1970s and passed through the hands of antiquities dealers until it was rescued by National Geographic.
"'What's most fascinating about it is that it presents Judas not as the betrayer of Jesus, but actually as the most enlightened of Jesus' disciples,' said Fr. Donald Senior with the Chicago Theological Union."

  • Swiss Info Swiss translation shows Judas in a positive light

"Various scholars have already commented on the manuscript. Donald Senior, president of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, said the document revealed the diversity and vitality in early Christianity.
'The question [is] does this tradition, this alternative story... have a claim that in some sense is equal to the rival claim of the gospel tradition?' Senior said."

  • KOAA News Ancient scrolls raise questions of faith

"Rev. Paul Peel, of the First Lutheran Church explains, 'Many, many of these fringe books circulated and this is one of them. We just discovered it now. Should be interesting reading, kind of interested in reading it myself. But it in no way impinges on the centrality of the Gospel.'"
