The Baths of Diocletian
On Irene Hahn's Roman History Books and More blog, biographer Bingley has been posting notes and quotes about what the Roman History reading group is reading. At the moment, that means Gibbon. The latest note is on the Roman baths, and specifically, the Baths of Diocletian, which was located by the smallest of the seven hills of Rome. Diocletian was the Roman emperor responsible for dividing the Empire and putting it into the hands of four rulers, two senior rulers, called Augustus, and two Caesars. In the passage quoted from Gibbon, mention is made of the fact that Romans were not entirely happy about the loss of power from Rome, and were not appeased by the sop thrown at them, the magnificent Baths of Diocletian.
