Theodor Mommsen, who died on November 1, 1903, was a 19th century German scholar who started the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL), a collection of ancient inscriptions written in Latin. There were two directions the collection could have taken. One would have made the focus of the CIL literary. The other, the one that Mommsen selected, made the collection focus on more of the physical aspects of the inscriptions. The collection continues to be updated.
