Carrots As Love Philtres
Friday November 3, 2006
According to the Naples News' article Let's Talk Food: The humble carrot's roots trace back to a romantic reputation,
the carrot can be traced back 3000 years to ancient Afghanistan, from which source it was taken to the East and the Mediterranean. In Greece it was known as philtron, as in 'love philtre.' Greece wasn't the only area to equate shape with function. The article continues:
"Food historians maintain that it was the carrot's phallic shape that gained it a reputation as contributing to the lascivious nature of both men and women. The Romans fell for this propaganda and it became a favored food among the ruling classes. Caligula reportedly force-fed carrots to the entire Roman Senate, believing that they would rut about like wild beasts."Ancient Food
