"The author of the Iliad is either Homer or, if not Homer, somebody else of the same name."Aldous Huxley

On this Ancient/Classical History website Homer is usually referred to without qualification as the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey because it is inconvenient to write something like, "The Iliad, purportedly by Homer" every time the name Homer crops up. However, a reminder now and again that we don't know for sure that there was someone named Homer (or much else about the authorship of the Iliad and the Odyssey), is probably wise. Since it did just come up in the forum, I'm passing it along.
