Dating Easter
Tuesday March 27, 2007
The dating of Easter, which depends on the Vernal Equinox, could have been intended to include pagans rather than exclude Jews.
The date of Easter would be a fitting selection for the Roman Emperor Constantine as a sun worshiping pagan (even though he's better known as the first Christian Roman emperor), since it represents the rebirth of the sun, and is in the same season as the blood-letting pagan Hilaria and Taurobolium festivals.
Constantine is the emperor who is said to have promised to convert to Christianity if he won a certain battle. Since he did win, many date his conversion to Christianity to the battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 and not his baptism in 337.
