An acropolis is the high point of a city where a shrine to a city's most important god might be placed. In Athens, home of the acropolis, it was the site of the Parthenon, a temple for their patron goddess Athena. On the acropolis was the Temple of Athena Nike, the Propylaea, and the Erechtheion (dedicated to Athena and Poseidon), all built between 450 and 330 B.C.
