Fires in Greece

Monday August 27, 2007
Temple of Zeus at OlympiaFirefighters in Greece have been fighting deadly blazes near the site of the ancient Olympics, according to ABC News' Greek Fires Reach Ancient Olympics Site. Water-dropping aircraft and fire trucks have been able to protect the 2,800-year-old site. BBC news online reports that the Greek government is offering a "reward of a million euros to help catch the arsonists suspected of being behind the forest fires...."

The Times Online reports that 63 are now dead. The government is trying to decide whether to categorize the arson as terrorism. Fires have broken out in separate regions of the country, including one area where arsonists were caught on film. "Police were examining a mobile phone video showing two men apparently setting fire to pine forests on Mount Hymettos, on the outskirts of Athens, on Saturday."
