On Fire and the Greek Ruins

The ruins that have survived for almost 3,000 years are not made of wood, so why are Greek fire fighters and others worried about them? In Are Ancient Ruins Flammable?, Slate explains that the intense heat can also destroy them and they can crumble from the heat.

On a recent Backpacking trip to the Trinity Alps in N. California, I traveled through several miles of wilderness that a forest fire had burned to various degrees of intensity. One thing that stood out was the effect fire had on the granite and marble causing it to soften and crumble. Hope this helps.
