In Norse mythology Balder was thought to be invincible, so all the other gods were taking shots at this much-loved favorite son of Frigg and Odin. Balder's brother, Hod, wanted to join in the fun, but he was blind, so Loki, having fashioned a mistletoe-based projectile, offered to help. The reason Loki picked mistletoe is that unlike all the other materials available for arrows, mistletoe had been too young when the promises had been obtained, and therefore had not sworn an oath not to harm Balder.
