Marcus Cocceius Nerva ruled Rome as emperor from A.D. 96-98, following the assassination of the much hated Emperor Domitian. Nerva was the first of the "five good emperors" and the first to adopt an heir who wasn't part of his biological family so he was able to choose a qualified successor. The successor of the last of the five good emperors was his son Commodus, who, like Domitian, was one of the notoriously bad emperors.
