While elsewhere in the world Latin study appears to be making some modest gains, in Israel, Classics departments are dwindling, according to Haaretz.com's Will classical studies still be here in 10 years?. In Israel, "[i]n under five years, the number of faculty positions [in Classics departments] was cut by 40 percent." The article says the other time the classics were neglected was the Dark Ages.
Another article (with an agenda) mourning the loss of Classical studies is Mens News Daily's (op-ed) piece Why Cicero?. Its writer, Thomas Brewton, says progressive education led to the end of the study of Cicero as part of the standard curriculum.
Obviously, Cicero could not be permitted to remain in the school curriculum. He was a believer in the Stoic system of natural law in human affairs, the same conception of natural law that underlay John Locke's famous justification for ousting autocratic King James II.
