Fascinating picture. I can look at her for a long time. I’ve been fascinated by Pompeii for years; this is like meeting someone who lived there, which I suppose it is.
Love this image - there’s something so human about her face, you can almost see her thinking!
Given that it wasn’t specified as Sappho, I find myself wondering: who else might it be, whose name and writing may be lost to history?
Could be a Pompeiian matron writing an early todo list.
Pompeii is definitely one of the most amazing places I’ve visited. Many of the frescoes are in the National Museum in Naples - another wonderful spot, and easy to get to on Metro.
Sappho or not, this woman was definitely unusual for her time.
It always startles me how fresh the colors and paintings are, that were uncovered in Pompeii. That such destruction also resulted in such preservation — what a dichotomy.
Pensive pose, lovely historical painting.
Very interesting! I never knew the background about Sappho. It’s a lovely picture too. Makes you wonder what she is thinking about.
Lovely frescoe! I wish I had more time to study ancient history. MY DH would have been able to recite all the history around that time. It was a period and an area he really loved.
Since they called it Sappho, the first thought is that she is writing a poem. But it looks like she has color on her lips. Could it be that she is using a brush and a mirror to put some colour on her lips?
Did Ms. Gill alter her hairstyle?
Oh gods! Not another poem from Catullus. What can I say to make him leave me alone?
Nice art piece…see mine if you can thanks..
