The Norse Creation Myth
Thursday December 4, 2008
Each year around this time, when the news announces that the weather is 10 degrees below normal and there is a chance of accumulating snow, I think of the Scandinavians who settled in my region of the U.S. with their wintry stories, like the one about the winter solstice-blooming mistletoe that features in the story of the death of the beloved god Balder. A northern creation story features not a world of Chaos, like the story of the Greeks, but a chasm and contrasting forces of fire and ice, and an early ice sculpture artist who created gods. See:
