Watch the Winter Solstice at Newgrange

Thursday December 18, 2008

One of the most popular spots in the world for the Winter Solstice is Newgrange, where a prehistoric passage was apparently designed specifically to provide natural illumination to the passage at the winter solstice. This phenomenon was re-discovered only as late as 1967 by Professor O'Kelly, according to the Newgrange Solstice Webcast. From a small entry way, for a few minutes each year (with luck), a pitch black tomb is illuminated. The tour guides say it's bright enough to read a book -- but only if it's a sunny morning. Read more about my Visit to Newgrange.

The 2008 Winter Solstice illumination at Newgrange will be streamed live on the internet on Sunday Dec. 21, 2008, from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.

See World Clock for your local time.
