What Do You Know About Samnite Miles?
Monday January 12, 2009
Something mildly amusing happened on the forum. A poster asked about Samnite miles. When no one else responded, I tried to see if I could find anything about distance measurement in the Italic peninsula. Other than reading about the Romans, the closest I came to Samnite was the Gallic league. It would have been just my luck if league had meant association, but it meant what it was supposed to -- a specific distance. A Roman mile was based on the mille passus '1000 steps' of a Roman soldier, and the article said it wasn't until fairly recently that the mile came to equal exactly 1760 yards. As I posted the citation in the forum thread on Samnite Miles, I realized it was just possible that the person who posed the question wasn't asking the impossible (for me to answer) question about distance, but about a topic that sounds much easier: What do we know about the Samnite miles. Without Italics, I didn't know which miles he was referring to, distance or soldier. It turned out to be the latter.
Anyway, if you're interested in Gallic leagues or have any good information about Samnite warriors, please post in the forum thread on Samnite Miles.
