Septuagint refers to a Greek version of the Hebrew Bible that was translated in Alexandria in the 3rd century B.C. The name Septuagint is the Latin for 70 [see Latin Numbers] and was picked because there were supposed to be 72 translators (6 for each of the 12 tribes) and 70 was close enough. Another part of the legend maintains it took 72 days to complete. Because the name means 70, the Roman numerals LXX are used to stand for the Septuagint.
