From two Greek words meaning high and city, an acropolis is the high point of a city where a shrine to a city's most important god might be placed. An acropolis would have been a defensible spot, especially when fortified with walls. In Athens, home of the Acropolis, it was the site of the Parthenon, a temple for their patron goddess Athena.
On the acropolis were also the Temple of Athena Nike, the Propylaea, and the Erechtheion (dedicated to Athena and Poseidon).

This is a very nice simple informative and interesting. Thanks for making it simple and clear so beginners like me can understand. I always enjoyed Greek Mythology as a child but unfamiliar terms can be a bit mind boggling in a hurried world. Turns out it’s not so complicated after all.
