As a result of a Labor Day weekend visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, I bring you this photo of gray basalt statue of an Aztec goddess invoked by women in labor. Chalchiuhtlicue, "she of the jade skirt" was the rain god, Tlaloc's wife and was herself goddess of lakes and streams. Besides helping people via the restorative powers of water and protecting women in labor, she was connected with crop fertility and might have held corn stalks in her hands.
