On this day in ancient Roman history, in 10 B.C., the future Emperor Claudius (Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus), grandson of Mark Antony, was born in Gaul. The scholarly Claudius had deliberately been passed over for public office at the normal age, let alone the top job, because of his physical problems and behavior thought to indicate mental inadequacy, but after his nephew was assassinated, Claudius was made emperor.
