On This Day in Ancient History: This is the anniversary of the death, in Bethlehem in A.D. 420, of St. Jerome (Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus), the translator of the Bible into Latin. This Latin translation is called the Vulgate. In 382, Pope Damascus I had commissioned Jerome to re-translate the Gospels into Latin. Jerome also translated the Greek Septuagint version of the Psalms into Latin.
