The ancient Olympics was a major 5-day event that took place once every four years in the Peloponnese, the lower section of Greece, off the mainland. Not only was it a series of athletic competitions that conferred tremendous honor on the athletes, but it was a major religious festival in honor of the king of the gods Zeus as represented in the colossal statue of him sculpted by Pheidias (c. 480-430 B.C.) that was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
