What Is Happening to Ancient Syrian Artifacts?

In addition to mounting numbers of human corpses resulting from Syria's bloody civil war between the government and the Sunni Muslim majority, ancient artifacts are crumbling and being looted. Some of the areas of Syria, like Damascus and Aleppo, a spice-producing stop on the Silk Road, are among the oldest continuously occupied areas of the world. According to Syria's ancient treasures pulverised:
"The priceless treasures of Syria's history - of Crusader castles, ancient mosques and churches, Roman mosaics, the renowned "Dead Cities" of the north and museums stuffed with antiquities - have fallen prey to looters and destruction by armed rebels and government militias as fighting envelops the country.
