Next year is the 50th anniversary of the start of my favorite television series, Doctor Who. For those who have missed the adventures of the time lord, he travels around in time and space. Occasionally he winds up back on earth in our history. Occasionally he encounters isolated figures from the past, like Cleopatra. In one memorable episode, he went back to Pompeii the day before the famous eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. When the time travelers asked the residents about the volcano, they met incomprehension because the term volcano hadn't been invented yet. This was one of the great touches in the Volcano Day episode that starred David Tennant as the doctor. In connection with this episode, I've made up a list of relevant cultural references from the episode. If I've missed any big ones, please post in the comments to this blog post.
