The Apollo 11 mission in which the late Neil Armstrong memorably stepped onto the surface of the moon was named for one of the major gods of Greek and Roman mythology. Apollo was not originally a sun god, although he became one. His twin sister, Artemis, was also not originally goddess of the moon. Earlier he was one of the most cultured of the gods, a god of music, although it was Hermes who created and first played one of Apollo's special instruments, a capable healer, and a god of prophecy.
