How to Cite an Article From This Site

The Women's History Guide at About.com has written a useful article on how to cite articles from About.com sites. See her Citing Online Sources.

Since Jone and I are different people, some of the information needs to be adjusted.

  1. Where she writes "Author: unless otherwise noted on a page, articles are written by Jone Johnson Lewis," you would need to change the "Jone Johnson Lewis" to "N.S. Gill."
  2. The site title is, of course, not Women's History, but Ancient/Classical History.
  3. Finally, where she gives the following example:
    Example: Jone Johnson Lewis. "About Elizabeth Cady Stanton." About Women's History. URL: http://womenshistory.about.com/od/stantonelizabeth/a/stanton.htm Date accessed: {today}
    I would say:
    Example: N.S. Gill. "7 Hills of Rome: Capitoline." About Ancient/Classical History. URL: http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/cityofrome/ss/7hillsofRome_4.htm Date accessed: {today}
In addition, since the Latin language is important for Ancient/Classical History and since in English we pronounce cite and site the same, here are the Latin words behind the homonyms:
  • Cite: citare Related to a word for speed, the verb means 'to summon' or 'call forward' and could be used to mean 'to quote'. See cito at Perseus.
  • Site: situs from sĭno , sīvi, sĭtum 'allow' but the form situs can mean 'placed' or 'set'. See sino at Perseus.
We're missing one of the homonyms here, "sight," but that has Germanic origins.
