Vegetius mentions that Roman soldiers were required to be at least 6' tall. Six feet sounds like an impossibly high entrance standard for the ancient Mediterranean, but not if six Roman feet were only 177 cm.
Vegetius was writing in the Later Empire (the latest event alluded to in his writing being the death of Gratian 353 AD).
At this time, fewer Mediterraneans were being recruited as soldiers (legiones and auxilia), with most soldiers probably coming from German stock, with a marked difference in height.
All conjectural, of course, pursuant to archaeologicl investigation of burial remains.
