Mesopotamians Weren't the Only Early Farmers

Ancient Iraq (Mesopotamia -- the Cradle of Civilization) is only one of the areas in the world where agriculture first developed. Until recently, the list of other places included China, the Eastern United States, and South America. Now there may be reason to include New Guinea among these early agriculturists.

Radiocarbon dating has led some investigators to believe bananas and taro roots were planted there between 10,220 and 9,910 years ago, according to Science News.
