Old Kingdom

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: The Old Kingdom period of Egypt, which began with the fourth dynasty kings in 2686 B.C., lasted until 2181 B.C. when the pharaoh lost power possibly due to a foreign bride or the growing influence of local administrative units. The Old Kingdom was marked by a change from step pyramids to true pyramids and the focusing of religion on the sun.
