By , About.com Guide

Definition: The Old Kingdom period of Egypt, which began with the fourth dynasty kings beginning with Djoser, between 1570 and 1544 B.C., lasted until c. 2181 B.C. when the pharaoh lost power possibly due to a foreign bride or the growing influence of local administrative units.
