Definition: Priapus was probably the son of Dionysus and Aphrodite, a fertility god. Statues of Priapus, thought to confer luck, were marked by exceptionally prominent phalluses (ithyphallic).
A particularly noteworthy Priapus appears at the entrance to the Pompeiian House of the Vettii where the fertility god is shown weighing his incredible phallus.
