Joseph of Nazareth

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: Joseph was probably born in Bethlehem. He was the husband of Mary, mother of Jesus, according to the Gospels (Matthew 1:17-25 and 2:11-15 and 19-23), where he is also described as a carpenter (actually, tekton). Joseph may not have been the biological father of Jesus, but he acted as Jesus' earthly father. Considered especially pious for accepting the pregnant Mary as wife, Joseph was made a saint.
