Callinus of Ephesus - Archaic Greek Elegiac Poet

About Callinus of Ephesus: Callinus wrote elegies. Only one of the surviving fragments of Callinus' elegies is substantial. It consists of 21 lines and is a military song. Elegy was normally accompanied by a pipe player. The work of the earliest elegists, Callinus, Tyrtaeus and Mimnermus was suitable for performance on military campaigns and at parties.
Dates: A contemporary of Archilochus, Callinus was active in the middle of the seventh century B.C.
