Byzantine Empire

From KL47, for About.com

Definition: "The Eastern Roman Empire has only been referred to as 'Byzantine' since the 18th century. The term was coined during the Enlightenment by French scholars and philosophers like Montesquieu.... They therefore used 'Byzantine' to distinguish the surviving Eastern Empire from the earlier Roman Empire as if they were two different entities, even though one was obviously a direct, unbroken continuation of the other."
