Clipeus

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: Clipeus is the Latin name for the large round shield worn by Greeks and Romans. Originally it was round and big enough to cover a person. It was made of wicker or wood and covered with oxhide, and edged with metal. In the center was a projection that could serve as a weapon. The Romans eventually gave up using the clipeus and instead used the scutum.
