Cartouche

By N.S. Gill, About.com

Definition: Cartouche is the word for the oblong or oval shape enclosing the names of pharaohs and gods in Egyptian hieroglyphs.
The cartouches on the Rosetta Stone marked certain symbols as important. The symbols enclosed by the cartouches turned out to be proper names -- a fact that helped with the translation of the Rosetta Stone.
Also Known As: Shenu
Examples: The name for a pharaoh was enclosed in a cartouche.
