Julius Caesar adopted his grand-nephew Augustus. Julius Caesar's grand-niece Octavia married Mark Antony (of Cleopatra fame). Their daughter Antonia the Younger married Tiberius' brother Drusus and had Claudius as son. This makes Claudius the nephew of Tiberius, who followed Augustus as emperor of Rome.
