Many would say Caesar, or perhaps Alexander or Hannibal, but excluding those three whose merits could be argued for a couple more millennia, whom would you nominate? The polls will be divided into different categories, thematically, by region, where appropriate or possible. The selection of 18 names is based on a discussion in the Ancient/Classical History Forum.
Leading contenders will be faced off in a subsequent poll until we arrive at the military leader who was truly the best (or, at least, the best after Alexander, Hannibal, and Caesar) in popular opinion.
Each poll will run for two weeks.
