Hittites
<Back to Last Page>     <Full Glossary>

Definition: Ancient inhabitants of north Syria, Asia Minor, and Anatolia, the Hittites displaced earlier inhabitants, Hattians, expanded their kingdom, and ousted Hammurabi's dynasty in Babylonia.

The language of the Hittites is the earliest preserved Indo-European language.

The Hittites, who remain mysterious, barely mentioned in the Bible, and considered barbarian by the Egyptians, brought Mesopotamian ideas into Asia Minor and from there to Greece.
