Definition: The Middle Kingdom (2134-2040 B.C.) was a period of Egyptian history that began with the 11th dynasty when king Mentuhotep reunited Egypt. During the Middle Kingdom period, the capital of Egypt was moved from Memphis in lower Egypt to Thebes in upper Egypt.

During the 13th dynasty the Hyksos overran Egypt and the Second Intermediate Period began.
