Apollo has many attributes, but he wasn't originally the chariot riding sun god Helios. He was a god of prophecy, healing and music, the twin brother of Artemis (Greek) or Diana (Rome). Unlike his sister and most of the Greco-Roman pantheon, the same name was used to refer to him in both Latin and Greek.Perhaps the earliest reference to Apollo as Helios occurs in fragments of Euripides' Phaethon.

Apollo slew the python, competed with Pan, and insulted the love god; as a result the laurel was used to crown victors at the Pythian games.
