Oedipus was the man who killed his father (Laius), solved the riddle of the sphinx, married his mother (Jocasta or Epicaste), became king, and when he found out what he'd done, blinded himself, according to the tragedies about him. In earlier legend, his wife-mother killed herself, but he continued to rule as king.
