Picumnus


Italian agriculture god, husband of Pomona. He and his brother Pilumnus were the protective deities for women in childbirth and new born infants.

Picus


Also called Picumnus, he was credited with discovering the use of manure in agriculture. He is called son of Stercutus in consequence. He is the father of Faunus. Another legend claims he was a warlike hero, the earliest king of Latium, wealthy, and who was finally changed into a woodpecker.

Pietas


Roman goddess of domestic affection. Her symbol is the stork.

Pilleus


Round felt hat with little or no brim, the mark of fishermen, sailors and artisans. Castor and Pollux, Odysseus, Charon, Hephaestus, and Daedalus wear it. pileus

Pilum


Roman legionaries' six foot javelin, hurled at the enemy at the start of the engagement before using the sword. Wooden shaft was a yard long fitted with a yard long iron head with a barbed point. Marius altered construction so if the head stuck in the enemy's shield, he would be unable to pull it our and use it.

Pilumnus


One of the Italian gods who protected women in childbirth from the mischief of Silvanus. (See Picumnus.)
