Definition: Templum is the Roman term for a sacred space marked out by the augurs. The templum was rectangular and aligned with the cardinal points. The front of the templum faced west. A building erected on this space could become a sanctuary of the gods or when the pontifex consecrated it. The rostra and curia were not.
