Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Justinian is called the last of the Roman emperors and the first of the Byzantine emperors. Born in Macedonia, his family came from Illyria, and his native language was Latin.

528-9	Code of Justinian.
529	Founding of the monastery of Monte Cassino.
530-533	Digest of Justinian.

533	General Belisarius overthrows the Vandals in Africa and annexes it (534)
536	Belisarius occupies Rome.

538-9	Frankish invasion of Italy. Belisarius overthrows Goths in Italy.
541	Belisarius against Persia.
546	Gothic King Totila captures Rome.
547	Belisarius drives out King Totila.
549	Goths take Rome.
552	Death of King Totila. Narses takes Rome.
554	Narses defeats Franks and Alamanni.
559	Belisarius saves Constantinople from the Huns
562	Belisarius dies.
565	Justinian dies.
