| Mesoamerican God Tlaloc |
Tlaloc - He who makes things grow
Known to the Olmec as "Epcoatl", meaning Seashell Serpent; to the Maya as Chac; to the Totonacs as Tajin; to the Mixtecs as Tzahui; to the Zapotecs as Cocijo. A water/rain god and probably among the oldest gods. Benevolent, he would release floods and lightning when angered.
Tlaloc and his fellow deities, the Tlaloque, were held responsible for certain illnesses, like dropsy, leprosy, and rheumatism. Those who died due to one of Tlaloc's diseases, or drowning or a lightning strike were not cremated as was the normal practise, but buried. They were to live on in Tlaloc's paradise, Tlalocan.
Chalchiuhtlicue (âShe Who Wears a Jade Skirtâ), aka Matlalcueye (âShe Who Wears a Green Skirtâ), was Tlaloc's companion.
