Mt. Vesuvius Erupts

On A.D. 79 1 p.m. Mount Vesuvius erupted pouring ash onto the surrounding area including Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Lunae in Graecostasi

The Graecostasis was a platform between the Comitium and the Forum. Sacrifices were made there to Luna, the Roman moon goddess (like the Greek Selene).

Mundus patet

Mundus a ritual pit with a cover that was removed three times a year: Aug 24, Oct 5, and November 8. Lid was regarded as the gate of hell (ostium Orci). Spirits (manes) could emerge to roam the city.

Festival to Vulcan

The Volcanalia continued.

Sack of Rome

A.D. 410 the Visigoths under Alaric sack Rome.

1971 - Death of Carl Blegen who was a classical archaeologist from Minnesota who led excavations at Hisarlik (Troy), from 1932 to 1938.
