Elsewhere on About.com
Dateline: 12/28/99The end of the year is a time for reflection, for looking back at the past and planning for the future. While there have been many Internet Classics and Ancient History sites I've used extensively -- most of which have been listed in one of the three features Ancient/Classical History's Future on the WWW, Classicists' Contributions: John Porter, and Classicists' Contributions: William Harris -- there are also several About.com sites that have provided you and me with information. Today I will point out three of them. Looking to the new year, there are two new About.com sites with which you'll want to be familiar, as well.
In newsletters and features this Ancient/Classical History site has often linked to Archaeology, Latin, and Medieval History.
Kris Hirst
While our sites overlap, the Archaeology Guide, Kris Hirst is the one to ask about radio-carbon dating, excavations, techniques, field careers, and academic careers in archaeology. Her site features an archaeology atlas where you'll find information on ongoing excavations and institutions.
Janet Burns
Janet Burns is the Latin Guide and host of the Latin Grammar Hotline. She fields questions about learning Latin, Latin grammar, and oddities of the language.
Melissa Snell
The Medieval (and Renaissance) History Guide, Melissa Snell, beautifully illustrates her knights and chivalry site. Unlike Ancient History's predominantly pagan cast, Christianity is the unifying link in her vast topic. Byzantine history is in her bailiwick. She's the one to turn to for post 476 (Fall of Rome) historical information. Melissa Snell's site was recently described in Civilization October/November 1999.
Recently two new Guides with related sites joined the About.com ranks, Judaism, Lisa Katz, and Military History, Stephen Ural. In the coming months you'll find information on the history of Judaism and Israel on Lisa's pages. Stephen Ural already has a substantial library on the ancient wars.
